5 Public transport passenger transfer survey Transfer survey helps us to distinguish between the – Passengers whose origin and destination is near the minibus taxi stop where they boarded/alighted and – Those passengers who are transferring to other minibus taxi routes It involves interviewing the minibus taxi passengers about details of their current trip The surveys are conducted during the peak period (6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.)

6 Transfer Survey - Continued Surveys performed at a total of 35 major transfer locations throughout Kampala Surveys conducted along all legs of an intersection and on both sides of the road Public transport in Kampala mainly constitutes – Minibus taxis (14 seats) – 29 seat buses – 41 seat buses

8 Transfer Survey Form Data Entry Step 1: Write down your Name – Example: Chris Van Eyken Step 2: Write down the Survey Location – Example: Bombo Road and Makerere Hill Road Step 3: Write down the Survey Date – 02/03/2015 Step 4: Write down the Page Number – Example: Number the sheets as 1, 2, 3, and so on

9 Filling the Form – Questions to ask We are going to determine you about how many vehicles you took and from where. Where did you start your trip? By what type of vehicle? – Boda-boda, minibus taxi or bus? In this vehicle, what was the destination? At that (or this) location, how long did you (or will you) have to wait for the next minibus or bus?

10 For subsequent stages Where are you going now? Will you take another minibus or bus from there? – If answer is: “No this is the end of my trip” – If answer is: “Yes”, keep asking about further segments of the trip until they reach their destination

15 BRT Surveys – Instructions Each surveyor will be assigned a surveyor id and a survey location Each surveyor will be reporting to a supervisor The surveyors should arrive at the survey location 30 minutes before the start of data collection. 18 Schedule/Logistics information Transfer test day: Monday March 2 – Transfer (Tuesday March 3 rd & Wednesday March 4 th ), – Frequency & Visual Occupancy (March 5 th, 6 th, 9 th and 10 th ), – BA on-board (March 11 th - 27 th ) You will be paid for the training and the days you work. You will receive your wages at the end of each week. You will turn in the hard copies of your survey forms at this time.
