2 Questions to Think About 1. Make a list of all materials you observe. Is anything hazardous? 2. Estimate how much of total weight is contaminated. 3. Would you prefer to unload the container? 4. These are 2 containers out of a group of 115. Would you want to inspect more of them? How much and how do you select? 5. Is this waste allowed in your country? Would you send all 115 containers back to the country of origin? 6. Who would you contact for the return shipment? 2

3 Start of the physical inspection: SAFETY Beware of: – Other traffic on the terminal – Other cargo that is stored in neighbourhood – Gasses – Cargo which is not properly stowed/packed – Leaking cargo – Radioactive or other hazardous cargo – Sharp objects 5-12-2015 3

4 Safety tools: Before and During the Inspection Notify your: your organization port authorities, owner of the terminal Use your personal safety equipment Follow the safety instructions of the terminal Do not enter an enclosed space unless it has been checked on:-oxygen (19.5% minimum level) -dangerous gas (fumigants, spilled chemicals, etc.) 4

5 Physical inspection Use your senses: Smell Observe Look behind the first row(s) (sandwich construction) Testing or sampling needed? If the owner is around, ask for information 5
