The Mexican Culture

Unit Summary The students will learn about the different traditions of the Mexican culture in Spanish. They will be able to identify the main traditions and their importance to the culture in Spanish. They will be divided into groups and each group will be assigned one of the main traditions on which they will create a PowerPoint presentation explaining it more in depth in Spanish. Each student will focus on one aspect of that celebration, such as traditional food, traditional dances, and traditional rites while learning the appropriate vocabulary in Spanish.

Content Standards 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied. 5.1: Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting.

Objectives Students will be able to identify the main celebrations of the Mexican culture and identify their components. I would want to clarify some of the myths about the Mexican culture I would want to illustrate Mexico’s cultural richness I would want to transforms students’ misconceptions of the Mexican culture I would want the students to recognize the main Mexican culture traditions I would want students to dissect the Mexican culture I would want students to distinguish the different Mexican celebrations I would want students to value the richness of the Mexican culture

Curriculum Framing Questions Essential Question: Why are traditions important? Unit Question: What is the most important celebration in the Mexican culture? Content Question: What are the rituals of this celebration? What is the traditional food? What is the traditional costume? Why is this celebration important?

Gauging Students Needs Assessment The purpose is to collect all the information about what students already know about this topic and to recognize any misconceptions they might have about the Mexican culture Using KWL Charts helps students visualize what they know, what they would want to know and what they have learned about the Mexican Culture The KWL chart gill help generate students curiosity about the Mexican culture

Projects Projects would be utilized to engage students more in depth into the Mexican culture Students would create a project identifying the key elements of one of the Mexican celebrations in groups. They would incorporate findings of their individual research into their group project to be presented to the entire class

21 st Century Skills The students learn to collaborate with each other. The students would utilize the World Wide Web to determine the importance of each celebration. They would work collaboratively to create a PowerPoint presentation They would brainstorm the main components of a celebration and apply their findings to investigate what are the components in a Mexican celebration
