4 What Is the Community Service Chair. 100 Years of Rotary in Ireland District Assembly 7 May 2011 The district Community Service chair coordinates and promotes club community service projects within the district. works with clubs; encourages district-wide participation; shares information and ideas with Rotarians Encourages clubs to share new ideas which can then be promoted among Rotary Clubs within the district.

5 What Is the Community Service Chair. 100 Years of Rotary in Ireland District Assembly 7 May 2011 Encourages and fosters the ideal of service to the personal, business and community life of every Rotarian. Has the Opportunity to encourage every Rotarian to exemplify “Service above self”. Has the chance to respond to the needs of his/her local community.

6 What is Community Service 100 Years of Rotary in Ireland District Assembly 7 May 2011 Community service is one of the avenues of Service which encourages Rotarians to offer service to their communities. Every Rotary club and every Rotarian assumes a responsibility to find ways to improve the quality of life for those in their communities and to serve the public interest.

7 Community Service Projects. 100 Years of Rotary in Ireland District Assembly 7 May 2011 Are relevant to the community they serve as a learning experience for Rotarians Identify a Rotary club’s role in its community Determine how Rotarians can help with the resources at hand.

9 Successful Projects Operating in our Communities 100 Years of Rotary in Ireland District Assembly 7 May 2011 The Rotary Christmas Memorial Tree Appeal A Symbol of Rotary’s Commitment to Community Started in Waterford in 1998 Has raised funds of €1,000,000 2010 12 new Rotary clubs joined the program These 12 new clubs raised an average of €9,675.00 each.

10 New Ideas Giving Blood Improving Our Environment Encourage clubs to share new ideas so that the ideas can be promoted to other Rotary Clubs within the district. 100 Years of Rotary in Ireland District Assembly 7 May 2011

11 Giving Blood 100 Years of Rotary in Ireland District Assembly 7 May 2011 3,000 donations are needed every week. Over 1,000 people receive transfusions every week in Ireland. Only 3% of the Irish population give blood, providing blood for a population of over 4 million. Only 5% of the Irish population eligible to give blood do so. A car accident victim may require up to 30 units of blood.

14 How can we celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Ireland 100 Years of Rotary in Ireland District Assembly 7 May 2011 Plant a tree in the community. Create a rotary garden e.g. Monaghan Club undertook a project in conjunction with Monaghan County Council Donate a Rotary clock to the local community e.g. RC Portlaoise undertook this project. Every Club raise funds to send one of their members to volunteer in the “Eradication of polio” program
