8 2,1 How are the particles arranged in a solid? The particles in a solid are close together, like neat and even stacks of tiny balls. Each particle moves back and forth around one point. This arrangement of particles gives a solid its definite shape.

11 2,4 John left a glass of iced tea on the table for several hours. When he came back, he noticed there were drops of water on the outside of his glass. Explain why this happened. There is water vapor in the air. So when the cold liquid meets with the water vapor (a gas), it cools and condenses forming the beads of water on the outside of the glass.

12 3,1 Why does a liquid have the same shape as its container? When the particles in a liquid move, they bump into the walls of their container. The solid walls of the container don’t change shape. The particles stay close together. So, the liquid takes the shape of its container.

16 4,1 How can matter be changed from a liquid to a solid? Matter can be changed from a liquid to a solid by removing heat (ex. freezing water=ice).

17 4,2 Mary got a glass of ice cold lemonade. Her father tells her to come in the living room, so Mary sets her glass on the table. When she returns, she sees drops of water on the outside of her glass. What part of the water cycle does this represent? Condensation

18 4,3 Sometimes after it rains, you might notice rainbow streaks on the puddles on a road. Motor oil from cars floating on the water causes the streaks. Explain why the oil floats on the water. The oil is less dense than the water, causing it to float on the top of the puddle.

19 4,4 Yesterday when it rained there was a large puddle of water on the playground. Several days later the puddle had disappeared. Explain what happened to the water. The Sun caused the water to evaporate into the air and changed it from a liquid to a gas.
