Napoleon Bonaparte Jean-Francois Champollion

4 ‡In 1822, Jean-Francois Chapollion unlocked the key to understanding Egyptian hieroglyphs. ‡This stone dates from March 196 B.C. Although the inscriptions were written in three different scripts, the ancient Egyptians conveyed the same message. ‡Hieroglyphic ‡Demotic ‡Greek ‡The Egyptian Demotic and the Egyptian hieroglyphs was written based upon the Greek language.

5 Journey through the Rosetta Stone ‡The writings on the stone begin with the praising of king Ptolemy V and the good deeds done for the temples. ‡The final part of the text describes the establishment of the cult of the king. An example for that is how the priests maintain the cult of the king. ‡“(…the priests shall pay homage three times a day)”. ‡In other words, priests had to pay honor or show respect towards king Ptolemy V.
