4 Saar Plebisite According to the Treaty of Versailles, the people of the Saar would have an opportunity to vote. They could form their own country They could join Germany They voted 9-1 to join Germany This gave Hitler more power especially on the world stage.

5 Remilitarization of the Rhineland Hitler debated with his generals about entering the Rhineland. He believed the French would simply leave. Von Blomberg thought they would fight. Hitler moves in with 10,000 troops and France leaves, Britain does nothing.

6 Rome Berlin Axis Hitler and Mussolini created an alliance. Other nations could join, they wanted Japan. Japan could apply pressure in Russia and British interests in Asia.

7 Anschluss Austria decides to have a vote on unification with Germany. Before the vote Hitler sent in troops to “ensure the vote was fair” The result was 99% in favour of unification as people felt threatened.

8 Allies Chamberlain argued the treaty of Versailles was wrong to force them to be separate. France couldn’t do anything alone.

9 Takeover of Czechoslovakia Hitler now wanted the Sudetenland back from Czechoslovakia. France and Britain agreed to protect it. Very close to war so they meet in Munich to decide.

10 Munich Agreement Hitler lessened his demand and only asked for the German speaking areas. Chamberlain of Britain agreed to this. Hitler then comes back to a second meeting and demands all the Sudetenland.

11 Munich Agreement Britain, France give in. Czechoslovakia is never consulted or invited to the conference. Allies begin preparing for war.
