Establishment for ACT WorkKeys is Due October 23, 2015 Please see the information in the Spotlight for how to establish your school for the Spring 2016 administration of the ACT WorkKeys assessment. New this year! Schools will establish themselves using a new online tool called PearsonAccess Next (PA Next). To use PA Next, test coordinators who are listed in the Educational Entity Master (EEM) site (www.michigan.gov/eem) should have received an email with login instructions.

17   College Board will determine material order based on the Pre- ID’s in the Secure Site and approved accommodations at the College Board site  Labels will be shipped to schools to be placed on student answer sheet and Student Data Questionnaire prior to the test date  There will be a small amount of overage sent to buildings. Schools must add the students into the Secure Site and then generate a label using one of the blank ones sent Pre-ID

18   SDQ, Instruction Booklets, and Pre-ID Labels  These are to be completed PRIOR to the day of the test (45 minutes)  As a part of this process, students can choose to participate in the Student Search Service (optional)  Students Search Service helps connect students with colleges, universities, and scholarship opportunities that match up with students’ interests and needs  Instruction booklets must be distributed to each student  In addition to instructions, contains information about the SAT – terms and conditions Student Data Questionnaires (SDQ)

19 Planning for Testing Rooms, Room Set-up and Staffing Needs

20   Options for Rooms....  Larger Spaces, such as auditoriums and gymnasiums  Smaller Spaces, such as Classrooms  Location of the testing rooms within the building...  Separated from other classes/tests on different schedules or taking different assessments (minimize noise and other disruptions when classes or other assessments break)  Area where there will be minimal noises/distractions from outside the building  Access to Restrooms Testing Rooms

21   Face seats in the same direction.  Place chairs directly behind those in the preceding row.  Use chairs with backs.  Separate each student by a minimum of four feet from right to left (measure from center of desk).  Ensure unimpeded access to every student by staff. Seating Requirements Seating Diagrams, along with requirements avilable in Test Center Supervisor’s Manual

22   Seat only one student at a table measuring six feet in length or less.  Seat students at least four feet apart and facing the same direction if tables longer than six feet are used.  Provide a large, smooth writing surface, preferably desks or tables.  Tablet-arm chairs must have a minimum writing surface of 12 x 15 inches.  Study carrels, lapboards, language laboratory booths, and tables with partitions or dividers are not acceptable Seating Requirements

24  Staff cannot  Be employed by out-side test prep company  Have taken the SAT within 180 days of the administration date  Have a member of their household taking the test at any site on the same date There are allowable uses of aides, paras, substitutes and coaches for proctoring and hall monitors. 30 Oakland Schools – Department of School Quality WHO is required to take the SAT? 11 th grade & eligible 12 th grade students Schools are required by state and federal law to test a minimum of 95% of students eligible to test.

31 Oakland Schools – Department of School Quality WHAT is the SAT? The SAT is a college entrance test, created by the College Board. The SAT measures student performance in Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math.

34 Oakland Schools – Department of School Quality HOW do students take the SAT? For 2016, Michigan students will take a Paper & Pencil version of the test, scored by machine. Student essays are scanned into a database and scored by College Board staff. Students will receive a printed score report, as well as a online score report.

Michigan is required by federal law to administer a college entrance test to students prior to exiting high school. The change to SAT was made to provide schools with a more rigorous and cost effective tool to measure student readiness for college level learning. This information is used to continuously support and improve student learning and hold school accountable.

40 Oakland Schools – Department of School Quality Tips & Strategies SAT personnel strongly recommend that the best preparation for the SAT is strong school achievement, especially in core content classes and Honors/AP classes. Put away the calculator (some of the time).With the guidance of your child’s math teacher, help your child get in the habit of math reasoning without the use of a calculator.

In addition to practice items from SAT & Khan Academy, talk with your child about informational graphics you encounter in newspapers, magazines, television broadcasts, and internet content. Build reading stamina. The newly redesigned SAT includes more complex reading passages, including U.S. Founding documents and texts revolving around global conversations. Have your child read daily and engage them in reflection on what they have read.

43 Oakland Schools – Department of School Quality Frequently Asked Questions Do colleges accept SAT scores? – YES! All Michigan Colleges & Universities will accept SAT Scores. Virtually all colleges across the county accept SAT scores too. However, families should thoroughly research the colleges & programs that interest them.

44 Oakland Schools – Department of School Quality Frequently Asked Questions Do scholarship granting organizations accept SAT scores? – Many scholarship granting organizations accept SAT scores. However, families should research scholarships to see their requirements. Some may only accept ACT scores.

45 Oakland Schools – Department of School Quality Frequently Asked Questions What is a good SAT score? – The redesigned SAT has new features and new scoring, so data is not available yet on how the new SAT compares to the old SAT or the ACT. The College Board will release this information to the public in May of 2016.

46 Oakland Schools – Department of School Quality Frequently Asked Questions Should my child still take the ACT? – The SAT score your child will receive should meet their college admissions & scholarship needs. Students are free to take the ACT, but this is an independent family decision. By law, schools must test students with the SAT, regardless of other tests they may have taken.
