10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 1/14 really Various updates Update on LHC schedule: Beam to Alice starts ~Oct. 24. Not all sectors are cold. Circulating beam starts ~Nov. 18 at low energy. Collisions at 540 GeV before Xmas?? Xmas break is Dec. 18-Jan. 4 (everything off) CSC: ME4/2 chambers now have LV. Time to switch to 3-layer pretriggers. Time to take single-layer (e.g. ME1/x), bottom-only local runs. Power-off test was flunked last Weds. Power-on sequence is being revamped to maybe kill fewer boards. My schedule: At CERN until Oct. 21 Then L.A., Oct. 28 Fermilab (Upgrade workshop), L.A. (DOE review) Back at CERN Nov. 13-25, back to L.A. for Thanksgiving At CERN again Dec. 3-16 Chris passed his comprehensive exam but didn’t tell me…

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 2/14 really Progress Done in last week: Upgrade: Revised FY10 muon upgrade plan, $431K  $352K  2-page report on upgrade activities thus far CD0 document edits: upgrade funding profile, simplified electronics diagram Reviewed CFT-09-13 (Level 1 trigger), 178 comments New draft ready for more comments  Put together draft CSC shift schedule for Nov. 2009-March 2010 CSC “task force” organization discussions TOF ideas for cosmics, etc (see later slides)

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 3/14 really TOF calculations: collision muons t= d/c, dt=t-t 0 where t 0 =time for ref. Chamber ME+-1/2/28 Collisions: d=sqrt(r 2 +z 2 ) X d

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 4/14 really TOF calculations: single beam halo t= d/c, dt=t-t 0 where t 0 =time for ref. Chamber ME+-1/2/28 Single beam 2 halo: d=z; conversely beam 1 halo d=-z X d Beam 1 z-axis + endcap - endcap Beam 2

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 5/14 really TOF calculations: cosmic rays t= d/c, dt=t-t 0 where t 0 =time for ref. Chamber ME+-1/2/28 Consider bottom (easiest case): d from where?? X d less frequent more frequent

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 6/14 really TOF calculations: cosmic rays Initial thought: choose MB2 top, wheel 0 (barrel ref station) Will give more TOF at bottom than at horizontal X d less frequent more frequent

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 7/14 really TOF calculations: cosmic rays But depends on steepness of cosmic ray spectrum with theta. Why not barrel wheels 1 or 2? X d d’ d’’ Wheel 0Wheel 1Wheel 2

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 8/14 really Time correction for big CSCs 1.It looks like time of flight effect was taken into account. 2.Any discrepancy between group of 6 CSCs belonged to PCs located in one rack can be regarded as TTC coarse delay typo. Can TTC fine delay fix the problems? 3.May be there are another effects which makes this plots not uniform. Greg remembers Misha study of Dayong timing corrections (presented 18-Sept-2008)

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 9/14 really Use Misha’s analysis of timing changes: Fit for “reference point” in MB using the measured amplitude of “sinusoid” – amplitude will grow as reference point nears the endcap – E.g. MB0: small sinusoid, MB1: medium, MB2: large sinusoid – Effect should be < top-bottom TOF

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 10/14 really TOF calculations: cosmic rays Top of CSC: what to do? LCTs choose other direction Choose MB2 bottom? Will give less TOF (more negative t) at top But how to link top and bottom at horizontal? (Dayong synchronizes locally…)  Chose new reference chamber at horizontal -d less frequent more frequent X

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 11/14 really Model results: Hot off the press – calculate using MB Wheel 2 Shows similar variation and amplitude as data!

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 12/14 really Upcoming  Upcoming: Oct. 7 CSC upgrade electronics videoconference: Weds. Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. using EVO DCFEB for ME1/1 is highest on priority list. Progress? Need to upgrade ME1/1 TMBs & DMBs with optical links, faster FPGA. Are there mandated changes to other cards or to crates?  Oct. 8 Virdee a small meeting to discuss forward muon upgrades in all generality (including RPC).

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 13/14 really Other topics to discuss  Group infrastructure  EVO speakerphone in conference room?  What about printing from Linux boxes at CERN?

10/06/09 UCLA Meeting Hauser 14/14 really My to-do list Muon upgrade planning continues… Determine ALCT muonic timing parameters – for no change in timing on cosmics – for cosmics, from first principles – For single beam and collision muons – Check out Chad’s changes to program and new database I/O Determine a procedure for setting CFEB muonic timing parameters Work on talks for the FNAL workshop Oct. 28 and the upcoming DOE review of UCLA Oct. 29-30 CFT-09-13 review continues until paper is ready to go out Start saving firmware versions for all Emu electronics boards into CVS Someday: – Initial planning for 269B course in Spring “Physics of the LHC”. Invite speakers early on. – Create a CRAFT 2009 timing synchronization CMS note? – Slow particle timing in CSC – Update my personal web page (dates from 2002)
