10 Question of the Day Brought to you by: Brett Thomas In the morning the temperature of the gym was 68 F. In the evening the temperature of the gym was 78 F. Throughout the day there was a wrestling tournament in the gym. What explains the dramatic rise in temperature? Thermal Energy: As the activity and attendance in the gym increased so did the temperature.

11 I. Structure of the Sun Like Earth, the sun also has different parts. The sun is not solid. The sun is 100% gas. Like Earth, the sun has convection currents.

12 II. Energy of the Sun The sun is 4.6 billion yrs. old. How does it burn and stay so hot for so long? It is not only burning, but the sun is also shrinking due to gravity. The burning and energy created by gravity would only supply enough energy for the sun to last only 45 million years. How does the sun continue to shine?

13 II. Energy of the Sun Nuclear Power !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The sun is also powered by nuclear fusion. Nuclear Fusion- process in which 2 or more nuclei join together (fuse) to form a massive nucleus. The result is an enormous amount of energy. Nuclear Fusion Animation Fusion in the Sun!

14 III. Activity on the Sun’s Surface Photosphere is where action takes place on the sun’s surface. Sunspots- cooler, dark spots on the sun caused by slowing convection currents

15 III. Activity on the Sun’s Surface Solar Flares- giant storms on the surface of the sun that have temps up to 5 million degrees C. Solar flares can interrupt radio signals and affect satellites in orbit. X6
