The Mole Concept What is a mole? a)Furry animal that lives underground b)Freckle with hair coming out of it c)Concept of quantity used in chemistry d)All of the above

Quantities of numbers: 2 = pair12 = dozen 144 = gross500 = ream 6.02 x 10 23 = mole The mole is a number unique to chemistry. It represents a specific quantity of chemical that is involved in a chemical reaction.

Example: How long (in years) would it take to count to 1 mole, if you could count 5 atoms per second? Example: If you had 1 mole of dollars and could spend 1 million dollars every second until the mole was spent, how long (in years) would the money last?

We can’t measure a mole by counting! We must use a reference point of: 12 g of carbon = 1 mole Experimentally the number 6.02 x 10 23 atoms is equivalent to 12 g of carbon based on its atomic size and density of the atoms. This is based on the same idea that 1 dollar = 100 pennies

Example: How many schloofs are in 5 wiggins? If: 1 yipper = 5 zonks, 1 zonk = 7 astra, 1 astra = 2 wiggins, 4 schloofs = 1 yipper

Molecular Mass & Molar Mass The mass of 1 mole of any atom on the Periodic Table is equal to its Atomic Mass Number. Ex. 1 mole gold = 196.97 g = 6.02 x 10 23 atoms Ex. 1 mole of water (H 2 O) = 18.02 g (1.01 x 2 + 16.00) = 6.02 x 10 23 molecules
