2 Unit 7: Waves Monday, 2/9 Respond to the following (5 minutes) The water waves below are traveling with a speed of 3.0 m/s and splashing periodically against the Wilbert's perch. Each adjacent crest is 6.0 meters apart and splashes Wilbert's feet upon reaching his perch. How much time passes between each successive drenching (Period)? USE GUESS to answer the question. Upcoming dates:  Tuesday, 2/10 – last day to turn in missing waves work (4:00 PM)  Friday, 2/13 – Waves Quiz  Friday, 2/13 – End of 4SW  Wednesday, 2/18 – Waves Test (5SW)

4 Wave Behavior(20 Minutes)  Go to my website and  Review the PPT under ‘wave behavior resources’. At the end of the activity you should be able to:  Define what a boundary is.  Understand how a boundary influences a wave’s behavior.  Describe and simulate wave reflection or explain why you could or could not simulate it.  Describe and simulate wave refraction or explain why you could or could not simulate it.  Describe and simulate wave Diffraction or explain why you could or could not simulate it.

5 Wave Interference (10 Minutes)  Go to my website and  Review the PPT under ‘wave interference resources’. At the end of the activity you should be able to:  Describe wave interference.  Explain the superposition principle (in plain and academic language).  Describe the types of wave interference.  Identify the requirements for constructive interference to occur.  Identify the requirements for destructive interference to occur.  Illustrate all types of interference.

6 Standing wave (10 Minutes)  Go to my website and  Review the PPT under ‘standing wave resources’. At the end of the activity you should be able to:  Describe the requirements necessary to create a standing wave.  Illustrate a standing wave (label node and antinode)

7 standing wave A standing wave is the result of two wave trains of the same wavelength, frequency, and amplitude traveling in opposite directions through the same medium.

8 Antinode Node  Antinode: Location of Constructive Interference (maximum amplitude)  Node: Location of Destructive Interference (zero amplitude)
