3 Text line Swinburne Being a Successful Academic -Create a 3 year research plan -Find time to do research every week -Use semester breaks and sabbaticals -Consider secondment to a centre or institute -Link research to teaching -Find a focus or area of expertise -Focus on quality rather than volume -Be a good time manager 3 Plan your Research

4 Text line Swinburne Being a Successful Academic -Be prepared to take on leadership at your uni -Seek out a mentor -Maintain a balance of activities – teaching, engagement and research -Research – grants, HDR, publications, scholarly activities -Plan when you will be ready to apply for promotion 4 Plan your career

5 Text line Swinburne Being a Successful Academic -This depends on your research area of focus -What do you want to be an expert in? -Focus your work -Seek out likeminded people in Australia and overseas -Keep up with methodologies and theories -Make time to keep up with latest developments - (not just in academic publications) -Go to networking forums including government and industry forums 5 Seek mentors/collaborators

6 Text line Swinburne Being a Successful Academic -Record all your achievements and outputs -Keep a file of testimonials and spontaneous praise -Write case studies of your successes -Articulate your teaching/research philosophies -Promote yourself - (don’t hide your light under a bushel) 6 Keep a record

7 Text line Swinburne Being a Successful Academic -Offer mentorship and advice to students/academics -Offer to collaborate with both junior and leading Academics -Be available when senior academics ask you to do something -Don’t count the workload points! -Be a good corporate citizen does pay off -Work with PhDs, honours students and postdocs 7 Be kind to others

9 Text line Swinburne Being an Academic -Go to external professional and industry events/forums -Make yourself known -Do projects for external partners -Apply for grants -Keep copies of exchanges -Track your impact -Link your research to the real world -External engagement informs both your teaching and research 9 Be engaged

10 Text line Swinburne Being an Academic -Seek advice and mentoring -Collect your evidence -Be familiar with the promotion guidelines and requirements -Plan your application months in advance -Get someone else to read and comment on it -Secure your Dean’s support -Line up good references (choose wisely) -Start writing the application as early as possible (e.g. 2 months prior) -Don’t be discouraged if you are not successful the first time 10 Know when to apply for promotion (or move)
