2 Thomas Hobbes Born in Westport, England April 5 th 1588 – December 4 th 1679 He was a Western Political Philosopher Graduated from the University of Oxford Wrote books such as The elements of law, De Cive, and Leviathan

3 His Philosophy Hobbes believed that the government was needed to keep order in society. “To become prone to civil war, people ought to submit themselves to absolute political authority” Claimed that before society was organized human life was solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

4 The Leviathan Published in 1651 This book discusses his philosophy on disorder and how to contain it through government The Leviathan is a creature mentioned in the bible as one of the gate keepers of hell

5 Today’s Society We see his philosophy in the current society in places such as: - Laws: Create to make sure no wrong is done - Jails: Consequence from breaking major laws - Fines: Consequence from breaking minor laws - Torture: Did to the people we captured in war in order too find info on Osama Bin laden
