2 ITS Facts and Figures Founded in 1948 by the California state legislature in response to the deferred maintenance of transportation facilities during World War II Average annual research awards approximately $20 million Around 100 faculty and staff researchers Over 100 graduate students Houses one of the largest university transportation libraries in the United States

3 ITS Centers ITS Berkeley comprises seven research centers: –California Partners for Advanced Transportation TecHnology (PATH) –National Center of Excellence for Aviation Operations Research (NEXTOR) –Pavement Research Center (PRC) –Traffic Safety Center (SafeTREC) –Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC) –UC Berkeley Center for Future Urban Transport / Volvo Center –University of California Transportation Center (UCTC)

4 California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways Established in 1986 in collaboration with California State DOT (Caltrans) to develop solutions to the problems of California’s surface transportation system A multidisciplinary statewide program including cooperative projects with private industry, federal, state, and local agencies, and non-profit institutions

5 California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways Examples of PATH research: SafeTrip-21 and Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) California Test-bed Networked Traveler: Safety, Mobility, and Parking Next Generation Traffic Simulation (NGSIM) Vehicle Assist and Automation Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance Systems (CICAS) HOV Safety Automated Speed Enforcement

6 National Center of Excellence for Aviation Operations Research Established in 1996 as a consortium of four universities: –UC Berkeley –Massachusetts Institute of Technology –University of Maryland at College Park –Virginia Polytechnic Institute –George Mason University added in 2003

7 National Center of Excellence for Aviation Operations Research Mission: Drive improvements in the national air space and advance aviation technology Focus areas include: –Aviation system economics –Performance metrics development and evaluation –Aviation safety –Aviation security

8 Transportation Sustainability Research Center Founded in 2006 to conduct research on alternate transportation fuels, advanced vehicle technologies, transportation and environmental policy, and innovative mobility strategies TSRC is a collaboration between ITS and the Energy and Resources Group

9 Transportation Sustainability Research Center Projects include: Land use-transportation connection and goods movement in support of AB32 Plug-in and fuel cell hybrid vehicle research Carsharing and bikesharing research Lifecycle analysis of next-generation biofuels Analysis of clean fuel vehicle policy, including potential “Feebate” programs Smart parking for trucks and transit

10 Volvo Research Foundation awarded a multi-year, multi-million grant to a team of ITS Berkeley faculty to establish a Center of Excellence in the area of Future Urban Transport Center focuses on the interaction between technology and policy to improve the sustainability of urban transportation systems UC Berkeley Center for Future Urban Transport A Volvo Center of Excellence

11 UC Berkeley Center for Future Urban Transport A Volvo Center of Excellence Current projects include: Effects of exurban residential relocation in Shanghai Solving the bus bunching problem using self-synchronizing buses The perverse environmental impacts of city logistics policies Increasing intersection capacity with multiple modes Managing evacuations with advance warning

12 Mission: Reduce traffic fatalities and injuries through multi- disciplinary collaboration in education, research, and outreach Started in 2001 as a joint venture between ITS Berkeley and the School of Public Health Receives major support from the California Office of Traffic Safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the California State Department of Transportation (Caltrans)

13 Other projects include: Geo-coding traffic injury and fatality data Pedestrian, child passenger, and bicycle safety measures HOV lane safety analysis and recommendations Identification of high crash collision locations Research to support goals of the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) Research into DUI (alcohol-involved) crashes Older driver and rural traffic safety

14 University of California Pavement Research Center Joint UC Berkeley-UC Davis center Conducts research in partnership with other academic institutions, private industry, and government to investigate questions pertaining to the design, construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of the highway infrastructure

15 University of California Pavement Research Center Research areas: Development of a Caltrans pavement management system Pavement construction practices for rapid freeway repair Pavement sustainability

16 The University of California Transportation Center (UCTC) Multi-campus research unit whose theme is Transportation Policy and Systems Analysis Established in 1987 to serve as the Federal Region IX University Transportation Center (UTC) Sponsored in equal parts by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Caltrans

17 The University of California Transportation Center (UCTC) Functions include: Funds fellowships for transportation students Holds an annual competition for research project funding Publishes Access magazine Sponsors an annual student transportation research conference Advances policy research
