3 World War I 1914 The U.S. formally declared its neutrality 1915 Lusitania was sunk by a U-boat 1917 President Wilson call for a league of peace 1917 The “ Zimmermann telegram ” incident

4 World War I 1917 Wilson asked Congress to declare on Germany 1918 Wilson ’ s “ Fourteen Points ” for peace speech 1919 The Treaty of Versailles

5 The Roaring Twenties 1920s = a period in which the booming stock market was the center piece of a roaring economy Read Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald

6 Nicola Sacco & Bartolomero Vanzetti 1920 Both men were Italians, immigrants, and anarchists. Their execution showed racial and political prejudice in the 1920s.

7 Prohibition 1919 The Eighteenth Amendment prohibited “ the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors ” within the United States. Prohibition proved unenforceable.

8 The Effect of Prohibition The willingness to break the law contributed to a wider decline in moral standard. “ Bootleggers ” = a person who sell alcohol illegally. “ Speakeasies ” = private clubs Al Capone (Mafia) The Godfather

9 The Great Depression 1929 Wall Street ’ s Crash 1930-32 many banks closed The President Hoover was optimistic and did nothing to help jobless people.

10 The New Deal 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt took office. His approach was “ Take a method and try it. If it fails, try another. ” He created many government agencies.

11 Government Agencies The Civilian Conservation Corps – provide jobs for young men in works of reforestation The Agricultural Adjustment Administration – raised farm prices by paying farmers to take land out of production

12 The Tennessee Valley Authority – built dams, sold fertilizer, and reforested the area. Work Projects Administration – build roads, hospitals, city halls, bridges.
