2. Learning Objectives Write clearly, with appropriate vocabulary, to engage a reader. Write with a clear structure so that your ideas are ordered. Use a variety of sentence structures to create different effects.

3. Exams! Who needs them? I can live without them. However, qualifications are important if you want to complete further education, or if you want to find a job. But there always seems to be something more interesting to do than school work, even if it’s just tidying my room! Read the speech bubble on the left. Identify as many different sentence structures and types as you can. Write your own paragraph on the subject of homework, or a subject of your choice. Use a mix of sentence structures and types to make your writing varied and interesting.

4. Game Use the conventions of web advertising to sell an item from the list below. Example: Wooden Leg ‘Wooden leg, rather battered, one careless owner, suitable for pirate or similar adventurer.’ Word limit: 20 words The sorting hat from Hogwarts Dr Who’s sonic screwdriver The White Rabbit’s watch

5. Definition Connectives Connectives glue your sentences together – they connect ideas within sentences and connect sentences together into paragraphs. Without them, writing can seem fragmented and unconnected. They can be used to; Join two ideas together (We went to the shop and met the others for lunch) Create a link between the main and subordinate clause ( Even though I’d rather go to the football match, I have agreed to visit my Grandma on Saturday afternoon.)

6. How many connectives can you think of? Use five of the connective in different types of sentences; as co-ordinators in compound sentences. in complex sentences with a subordinate clause. cohesive markers showing time, place and sequence.

7. Plenary Self assess your own work for spellings and quality of vocabulary. Identify, and change, 7 words increasing the sophistication of language used.

8. Homework Make a list of all the different types of texts you may be asked to write in the exam and the purpose they have. E.g. Writing to persuade – A letter to the local MP asking for increased funding for youth services in Amersham. Spend ten minutes looking through Amersham’s website in preparation for next lesson.
