2  Pick up a new Daily Work Organizer.  Find your new seat.  Record your goal for the week.  Catalyst: The three subatomic particles that make up an atom are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are positively charged and are in the nucleus of the atom with the neutral neutrons. Protons determine the physical properties of an atom. Electrons are negatively charged. Electrons are tiny, fast moving particles that swirl around the nucleus in the electron cloud. They determine the chemical reactivity of an atom. Are you more like a proton, neutron, or electron? Why?

3  I can describe chemical reactions by writing balanced chemical equations.  I can make calculations involving moles.

5  Pick up an article and questions at the back of class.  Answer all the questions on a separate sheet of paper.  Make careful calculations! These questions will be graded.  If you need help, raise your hand.  If you would like to use a chemistry book, pick one up at the back of class.  When everyone is done with the benchmark, we will pause and review the calculations together.

6  Types of Questions: 1. Convert from # particles to # moles. 2. Convert from # moles to # particles. 3. Find the molar mass of a compound. 4. When given the molar mass, convert from # grams to # moles. 5. When given the molar mass, convert from # moles to # grams. Think, Pair, Share: Compare the question types. Can some of these be grouped together? Which ones?

7  Identify what the question is asking.  Identify what information is given.  Identify what information is missing.  Set up your equation.  Solve.  Check your answer.

8  How many molecules are there in 4.2 mol of acetic acid (C 2 H 4 O 2 )? Question: # molecules in 4.2 mol Given: I have 4.2 mol acetic acid Missing: # molecules 4.2 mol x 6.02 x 10 23 molecules 1 mol Answer: 25.3 x 10 23 molecules acetic acid Convert to scientific notation: 2.5 x 10 23 molecules acetic acid

9  You have 3.01 x 10 20 molecules of acetic acid (C 2 H 4 O 2 ). How many moles of acetic acid do you have? Question: # moles in 3.01 x 10 20 molecules Given: I have 3.01 x 10 20 molecules Missing: # moles 3.01 x 10 20 molecules x ___1 mol____ 6.02 x 10 23 molecules Answer: 0.5 x 10 -3 moles acetic acid Convert to scientific notation: 5.0 x 10 -4 moles acetic acid

10  What is the molar mass of acetic acid (C 2 H 4 O 2 )? Question: molar mass Given: C 2 H 4 O 2 Missing: mass of each element  Find the molar mass of each element and multiply by their subscript: C = 12 x 2 = 24 H = 1 x 4 = 4 C = 16 x 2 = 32  Total molar mass? 24 + 4 + 32 = 60 g/mol

11  You have 180 g acetic acid. How many moles acetic acid do you have? Question: # moles in 180 g acetic acid Given: I have 180 g acetic acid Missing: # moles and molar mass 180 g acetic acid x ___1 mol____ 60 g acetic acid Answer: 3 moles acetic acid

12  You have 100 moles acetic acid. How many grams acetic acid do you have? Question: # grams in 100 moles acetic acid Given: I have 100 moles acetic acid Missing: # grams and molar mass 100 mol acetic acid x _60 g acetic acid 1 mol Answer: 6000 g acetic acid Scientific notation: 6.0 x 10 3 g acetic acid
