3  Benjamin Franklin- Author, publisher, inventor and diplomat  Bleeding Kansas- Conflict between proslavery and antislavery people in Kansas from 1854-1859

4  Cheswell Wentworth- Educated African American Patriots made the same midnight ride as Paul Revere warning the British are coming.  Crispus Attucks – American Hero and Martyr of the Boston Massacre

5  Dorathea Dix- Reformer who fought to improve the care of the mentally ill  Deere, John- Inventor the Steel Plow.

6  Eli Whitney- Invented the cotton gin and interchangeable parts  Emerson, Ralph- writer and poet.

7  Federalism- power of government into three branches  Free enterprise- Economic system, there is competition between businesses with little government control.

8  George Washington- commander of continental army.  George Mason- Anti-federalist who said constitution too powerful.

14  Mercantilism- Economic system where colonies could only trade with mother country.  Madison, James- The Father of The Constitution.

15  Northwest Ordinance- established government for northwest territories.  Nullification Compromise- Henry Clay’s compromise.

16  Ordinance- Law or regulation.  Overseer-Person who supervises a large operation or its workers.

17  Paine, Thomas- Wrote books named “Common Sense” and “American Crisis”.  Popular sovereignty- Government created by the people in order to govern themselves.

18  Quakes-Protestant group of dissenters called the society of friends.  Quartering act- allowed no soldiers to enter civilians‘ homes.

19  Representative Government – Power held by people who elect representatives.  Republicanism- people who hold power through elections or representatives.

20  Samuel Adams- opposed British taxation & helped sons of liberty.  Saratoga, battle- Battle which was turning point in Revolution.

21  Tariff-a tax on imports or exports.  Triangular Trade-a trade route that exchanged goods.

22  Unalienable Rights Right that could not be taken away.  Urbanization-major movement of people from rural to cities.

23  Veto-to reject a bill & prevent it from becoming a law.  Virginia house of burgesses-first representative assembly in the colonies.
