5 What is the ATOMIC NUMBER? oThe number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom Or oThe number of electrons surrounding the nucleus of an atom.

12 Why are Electrons so Important? The chemical behaviour of an atom depends mostly on the number of electrons in its outermost shell. valence electrons/shell All atoms with incomplete valence shells are chemically reactive and are responsible for the formation of chemical bonds between atoms.

19 Electronegativity The measure of an atom’s attraction for additional electrons Polar Covalent Bond - unequal sharing of electrons between two atoms with different electronegativity results. Non-Polar Covalent Bond – equal sharing of electrons between two atoms. Electronegativity = Stronger pull of shared electrons

20 The electronegativity difference ( ∆ En) is the difference in electronegativity number between two atoms participating in a covalent bond.

22 Molecular Polarity Depends on – Distribution of charges – Molecular shape Symmetrical molecular shapes produce non-polar molecules (whether bonds are polar or not) Asymmetrical molecular shapes produce polar molecules Balanced charges produce non-polar molecules Non-balanced charges produce polar molecules
