2 iMovie’s Interface An Event is an imported video project where source video is stored. You may have several events depending on how many imports. A Project is the active timeline where edits, audio and other compiled assets are arranged. Project Browser: organized edited clips Viewer Toolbar Event Browser: clips from source video are available for skimming Project Library Event Library Event Library

3 Filmstrip and Audio Active media in the Project Browser Filmstrip Soundtrack FILMSTRIP – sequence of clips; transitions, audio and titles are attached to the filmstrip using colored fields or markers. Notice: Audio is attached to a filmstrip clip by dragging audio to the background of the project browser (gray screen here). Audio can be layered. Field or Marker

4 Viewer Skimmed images or edited playback is viewable in the viewer. VIEWER: you can elect different views using the WINDOW menu option: small, medium or large or manually. When playback occurs, follow the red playhead in your event browser OR in clip you are skimming in event browser. Viewer TIP: Use space bar to playback movie Audio, Peak Meter and Media Buttons

10 Sharing to YouTube using iMovie Register for YouTube account using internet iMovie - Share: YouTube Click add to add YouTube account – also you can create at this time Grant iMovie permission to upload to YouTube Add a description and some tags. Tags are keywords that are used by the YouTube search engine. Dimensions Mobile – 480 x 272 Medium - 640 x 360 You can select a private movie / publish to continue When movie is finished uploading, you can notify friends – may take minutes or hours to view it NOTE: YouTube screens content. Do not try to upload any material with copyright protection.

11 Skimming Video  New way to view movie – drag playhead back and forth clips  Look in Event browser – this is your database of potential video – skimming video is viewable in both the selected clip and in the Viewer  Use audio skimming toggle button to turn off audio while skimming

12 Edit Tool in Advanced Mode  Preferences: Show Advanced Tools  Buttons in center tool bar – click EDIT button  Click and drag – then it’s added to the timeline  Arrow brings you back to standard mode  Change default length from 4 seconds to Clicking in Event Browser to a new duration

13 Advanced Editing Techniques  Insert new video in middle of clip – SPLIT portion of clip – EDIT: Split Clip – shows up as a green marker  Rejoin split portion – select one with other next to it : EDIT: Join Clip  Select portion – first or last frame, click fine tuning button – click and drag handle to extend or trim away video

14 Trimming Video  Clip in movie is in right place but too long or too short or action is cut off  Click and drag selection to portion you want to keep  Choose EDIT: TRIM to Selection  Click Clip Duration to open trimmer (in bottom edge of

15 Working with audio  Layer sounds, add fx, adjust volumes for perfect mix  Drag to background space – adds background to entire project or select specific clip and attach sound to that  You can overlap as many clips as you like  Drag bar to reposition  Titles will be shown in audio marker titles

16 Audio Adjustments To remove unwanted silence or noise at beginning or end, drag length at beginning or end of clips marker Multiple clips can have volume adjustment – click to open audio adjustments window – make necessary adjustments You can change volume of video clip audio as well – just click on audio adjustments Activate ducking in audio adjustment so that other volume is reduced compared to the selected audio Command and shift to extract audio

17 Background Audio – extra tips  Add audio to background of project  Use Trim feature to adjust length of audio  Attach more than one piece of music and iMovie adds an automatic cross fade  Pin Icon locks music to new location  You can trim a previous clip so that the pinned track moves with the attached clip and will not change position  Arrange Music Tracks:  Pinned tracks are in top list – you can release from pinned state  Floating Music Tracks allow you to change position of audio in background track

18 Sound Fx  Enhance your movie  Open music and sound effects browser  Effects are categorized – select a sound effect, press spacebar to preview it  Drag effect over a specific clip and it will be released over that clip  Drag icon of sound effect to new position  To adjust length, drag right  To adjust volume, click on green clip, then select adjust audio and adjust volume level  Add fade in / out using the sliding bar

19 Adding Voiceover  Mac’s built-in mic or external  Click voiceover button  Choose microphone you want to use (built in line input)  Adjust input volume so the level in the meter doesn’t reach the red zone  Choose noise reduction level – remove background noise to right or -20 dB / add voice enhancement for smoother voice  Choose location in filmstrip, countdown to three - creates a purple marker  Hit spacebar to end recording  Drag icon to change position or drag right edge to length to desired  Adjust audio by clicking on purple tab  Click on purple to delete
