Text Complexity Clermont County ESC, Curriculum Roundtable, October 1, 2014

Text Complexity Matters What students can read, in terms of complexity, is the greatest predictor of college success. (ACT study)

Text Complexity There is no exact science for determining the complexity of a text. Nor is there a single source of information that can accurately summarize the complexity of a text. Teachers need to use their professional judgment as they take into consideration a range of factors.

CCSS Three Part Model

Quantitative Measures Lexile complexity

Qualitative Measures

Reader and Task

Resources for Text Complexity Text Complexity Analysis Worksheet (all three domains on one sheet) available from the Colorado Initiative: http://www.coloradoedinitiative.org/wp- content/uploads/2014/04/Text-Complexity-Analysis.pdf http://www.coloradoedinitiative.org/wp- content/uploads/2014/04/Text-Complexity-Analysis.pdf PARCC’s Literary and Informational Complexity Worksheets are available here: http://parcconline.org/sites/parcc/files/Combined%20Passage%20Sele ction%20Guidelines%20and%20Worksheets_0.pdf http://parcconline.org/sites/parcc/files/Combined%20Passage%20Sele ction%20Guidelines%20and%20Worksheets_0.pdf More information about text complexity and the three-part model available in Appendix A of the CCSS for ELA: http://www.corestandards.org/assets/Appendix_A.pdf http://www.corestandards.org/assets/Appendix_A.pdf Helpful video from the Teaching Channel on Text Complexity: https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/simplifying-text-complexity https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/simplifying-text-complexity

Text complexity matters … in every content. Students… “must also develop special skills and strategies for reading text in each of the differing content areas (such as English, science, mathematics and history)— meaning that a student who “naturally” does well in one area may struggle in another.” ACT, Inc. (2006) Reading Between the Lines, Iowa City, IA
