We suggest an adaptation of UNESCO’s definition: Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, compute and use printed and written materials AND A VARIETY OF RELATED TOOLS associated with varying contexts AND SETTINGS. Literacy involves a continuum of learning enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society. 6 INFORMATION LITERACY  OUR DEFINITION: Gathering resources and applying them in order to answer a question….(Thus, important to know how to pose important questions for this purpose)  THEIR DEFINITION: Accessing and Evaluating Information -Accessing information efficiently (time) and effectively (sources) -Evaluating information critically and competently Using and Managing Information - Using information accurately and creatively for the issue or problem at hand -Managing the flow of information from a wide variety of sources -Applying a fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the access and use of information

Evaluation 6.1 Judge the product (effectiveness) 6.2 Judge the process (efficiency) Introduction--The purpose of this section is to both prepare and hook the reader. The student is the intended audience. Task--The task focuses learners on what they are going to do - specifically, the culminating performance or product that drives all of the learning activities. Process--This section outlines how the learners will accomplish the task. Scaffolding includes clear steps, resources, and tools for organizing information.Scaffolding Evaluation--This section describes the evaluation criteria needed to meet performance and content standards. Conclusion--The conclusion brings closure and encourages reflection.

11 MEDIA LITERACY  OUR DEFINITION: Communicating effectively (including ethical decision- making) within a variety of media formats  THEIR DEFINITION: Analyzing Media - Understanding both how and why media messages are constructed, and for what purposes -Examining how individuals interpret messages differently, how values and points of view are included or excluded, and how media can influence beliefs and behaviors -Applying a fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the access and use of media Creating Media Products - Understanding and utilizing the most appropriate media creation tools, characteristics and conventions -Understanding and effectively utilizing the most appropriate expressions and interpretations in diverse, multi-cultural environments

12 MEDIA LITERACY Important in today’s world? “From the clock radio that wakes us up in the morning until we fall asleep watching the late night talk show, we are exposed to hundreds, even thousands of images and ideas not only from television but now also from newspaper headlines, magazine covers, movies, websites, photos, video games and billboards.
