1 Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at Sherborne Primary School Sherborne Primary School has high aspirations for all children. We strive to ensure that all children achieve their best. Some children have long term and complex difficulties, and some children may just need a boost for a time-limited period. This jigsaw will give you an overview of what we do to help children with SEND. More detailed information can be found on our Local Offer which is published on our school website. SEND TEAM Mrs Stent is the SEN Coordinator and we have a number of SEN Teaching Assistants working within the team. Mrs Haynes, Mrs Brazier and Mrs Miles are the Senior SEN Teaching Assistants. If your child is on the SEND register you will have three SEND Support Meetings each year. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us or your child’s class teacher. SEND Information Meeting We will be hosting an SEN Information Meeting on Thursday 24 th September at 9:00 in the school hall. Please come along for an informal opportunity to find out more information about the SEND Code of Practice and how we implement it at Sherborne Primary. SEND Drop-ins Informal drop-in sessions are held once per month. (dates overleaf) ELSA Mrs Haynes and Mrs Coleman are our Emotional Literacy Support Assistants. They work with children in small groups,or individually, to overcome issues that are causing a child to worry or maybe hindering their confidence. Speech and Language Support Mrs Coleman works very closely with the local NHS Speech and Language Therapist. She works with individuals or groups to meet specific targets set by the therapist. These sessions build confidence and are fun. EHCPs Some children, who have more complex learning needs, may have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP). Parents /Carers and teachers need to request these plans from Dorset County Council. More information can be received from Mrs Stent or the Rose Road team who are Independent Supporters (Tel: 03003038604 ) First Class @ Number This is a Maths intervention programme that supports our younger children to build their understanding of the Number System. Success @ Arithmetic This is an intervention programme that supports our older children. It specifically targets a child’s mathematical misconception that is stopping their learning. It covers the areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Spelling, Reading and Writing If a child is struggling with their English skills we have several approaches we use to enhance their learning including: individual multi-sensory teaching of spellings and phonics, Write Away Together, Reading Inference intervention and small group booster sessions. For children with more complex needs such as specific literacy difficulties we are supported by a SENSS teacher from Dorset County Council. Cool Club Some children have great difficulties with their balance and coordination. This can impact on their writing, confidence and social skills. Mrs Miles has attended Learn to Move. Move to Learn training run by the Occupational Therapy team and works with a number of TAs to run a weekly Cool Club. They practise balancing, throwing, catching, threading and much more!!
