Captivating Conclusions Short Story Unit

Think of a Triangle 0 Restate Thesis 0 Relevance 0 Striking Thought

Restate Thesis 0 Don’t just copy your thesis from your introduction 0 Use different words! Thesaurus anyone??

Establish Relevance 0 Synthesize 0 Don't simply repeat things that were in your paper. They have read it. Show them how the points you made and the support and examples you used were not random, but fit together. Use topic sentences as a guide. You may reword them to show your reader the main points of the essay. 0 Create a new meaning 0 o You don't have to give new information to create a new meaning. By demonstrating how your ideas work together, you can create a new picture. Often the sum of the paper is worth more than its parts.

Striking Thought 0 Connect back to your opening 0 What is the lesson here? 0 What can someone learn from these characters? 0 How can someone learn from these characters?

0 (Revisit Thesis) Even though Jing-mei and Roger exude lazy, ashamed, and rebellious attitudes they learn from their wrong doing. (Relevance) Jing-mei finds out later in life that her mom only wanted the best for her, and Roger attains the knowledge that Mrs. Jones did not penalize him for his actions. This should push them both in the direction of success. (Striking thought) Adolescents can learn from both characters that it is important to think before acting.

0 Even though Lizabeth and Roger are immature they have the capacity to understand their mistakes to help them become better people. Lizabeth realizes that Miss Lottie is trying to find happiness despite the problems she is going through, and Roger realizes he does not have to steal to get what he wants. Teens are placed in situations so they can become better people and help others out when they are in trouble.

0 Scout Finch, a seeker of adventure and mockingbirds, teaches her readers how to grow up during troubled times; the Great Depression, the Tom Robinson case, and the Boo Radley incidents help define this emotional, inquisitive, and dynamic girl. Although America recovered by slowly creeping away from the grim conditions of the Great Depression and began to cleanse itself of the ugliness of racism, its past should not be forgotten. Just as Scout learns that Boo Radley is nothing to fear after experiencing his life first as fiction then as truth, America must learn from Her mistakes. Jean Louis “Scout” Finch reminds her readers what it was like to be young and curious from a child’s perspective-- a point-of-view which should always reflect the lessons discovered in childhood.
