Share information Making own lecture materials WEB Discussions Tutorials Self-evaluations Simulation studies @-learning Feedback Course database Objectives: decision making working with others integration of knowledge Encourage to develop: ability to learn independently improved communication skills an engineering approach to problem solving and design ability to understand complex systems and their simulation =Return of Capital= Research Oriented Curriculum timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Motivation for Research Oriented Curriculum Students learning from polished lecture material is weak Stimulate own thinking Group work Learn to use WEB Learn to solve and distinct by using self- studies and group interactions Learn wider-scope problem solving timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Student based sessions(s) Comment discussion Course Layout Student based tutorial(s) Comment discussion Special Assignments WEBMatlab/VIS-sim timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Grading 45 points yield highest grade ’5’ 15 points yield pass ’1’ seminar gives 50/50 points for student and group timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Tasks Student –session seminars –solving tutorials –optional special assignment Assistant –be a facilitator –planning tutorials (with prof) Professor –be a facilitator –course planning –grading timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Learning and Points Learning: – learn processing data & present information – learn interactions – learn information skill Rewards by points: –prepared a seminar material (max 20p) –discuss/solve tutorial assignment (max 10p) –seminar presentation /optional assignment (max 10p) –Thus you can have grade ‘4’ even without exam! timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Tasks for a Student Prepare a lecture –1-2 students in a group at a time –guides for a lecture available at the homepage –powerpoint format, submit one day before session by email Prepare assignments –in tutorials a list is rotated where calculated assignments are indicated (On/Off) Prepare an (optional) special assignment –simulation / litterature study –2-10 pages timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Participating Sessions Familiarize yourself with course material so you can comment lectures Write down –important points –questions –explanations/fillings of book(s) material Be active! timo.korhonen@hut.fi

S-72.227 Course Material Books –A. Bruce Carlson: Communication Systems 3rd Ed. –B.P.Lathi: Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems 3rd Ed –Sections from some other books/articles –Web! What is not distributed –lecture notes (each student/group writes own notes) –tutorial solutions What is distributed –special assignments –@learning material (if not available from NET) –auxiliary material given by a student or lecturer timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Contents Many pictures Many examples Verifying simulations Net links Building a Seminar Lecture Mechanical Table of contents Introduction Condensed body text Conclusions List of references (if not from the course book) General Understand If don’t – discuss in sessions – find out – omit Focus! timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Tutorials Given by students; discussed in-situ by course personnel & students Salary: based on participation, max 10 points Feedback by discussions If an assignment is left unsolved discussed next time Solutions not distributed (need to take notes or rely on group work) Student can verify tutorial assignments by simulations than can make up a special assignment! timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Optional Special Assignment Topic –student generated or –given by a course personnel (email-request) Distribution for all for students for discussions Types –simulations (also tutorial related) –literature research (http://http.cs.berkeley.edu/~gribble/summaries/) –company driven Format given in homepage, covers 2-10 pages Grading carries max of 10 points timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Course Homepage guidelines for –lectures (topics, key questions) –tutorial assignments –@learning and simulation program (VIS-Sim) students’ contributions (as special assignments) course bulletins group members Next seminar topic Next tutorial assignments auxiliary material timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Using Net Learn to use search engines Learn to use ready-made lecture material available from net Use encyclopaedias & databases for reference Use simulations to verify tutorial & special assignment results timo.korhonen@hut.fi

Technical Contents: Session Topics Most lectures follow: Carlson’s or Lathi’s book Exam is based on these reference books and tutorials Lecture program is updated in homepage weekly bases, eg at least week before lecture Session topics can be suggested and modified by student/group negotiations Sessions can be (and should be) reinforced by simulations & other related materials timo.korhonen@hut.fi
