1 6.3 Integers

2 6.3 Vocabularypg integers The set of whole numbers and their opposites (…-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3…). positive integer An integer that is greater than zero; it is located to the right of zero on a number line. negative integer An integer that is less than zero; it is located to the left of zero on a number line. whole number A number that has no decimal or fraction. Examples: 6, 10, and 1 opposite The opposite of a given integer can be found by adding or taking away a negative sign (-). For example, the opposite of -13 is 13, and the opposite of -8 is +8. absolute value On a number line it is the distance between the number and zero. Uses l l symbol. Ex-symbol for absolute value |-20| = 20 and read "The absolute value of -20 equals 20". Pg Numbers get smaller Numbers get larger Key words positive- gain, above, increase, ahead, deposit, elevation Key words negative- loss, below, decrease Ordering and comparing integers- Make a number line and graph the integers on the number line! Easy! Practice- Order from least to greatest (set table) 2, -5, 3, 0, -2 NOW….order them greatest to least (you just go backwards!) Okay, now let’s add and subtract integers (7.5) Use a number line to help. All you do is pay attention to just the sign of the integer. No sign means it is positive. 1.-5 + -7= -12 same as -5-7= -12 2.6 + -10= -4 same as 6 – 10= 4 3.I-7I – I-5I= 2 absolute value 7 – 5 = 2

3 Pg PRACTICE Put the integers in order from least to greatest. 1.8, 3, -6, 6, 11, -8 2.-31, -20, 32, 63, l-58l 3.56, -45, l-16l, -19, -55, 10 pg Remember- use a number line to place integers in order. But pay careful attention to which direction is asked for. Set your table and you will have it in the correct order. Order from greatest to least -2, 0, 4, -3, 1 _____ _____ _____ _____ ______ LG
