1 Human Resource Management Training & Development Handout 2

2 Activity Riding a bike Aim: You are to design a training course to teach children to ride a bicycle safely. State: your learning outcomes the resources you require the time needed the cost the content of the course and the learning and teaching methods your assessment methods – explain your reasons how you would evaluate your effectiveness

3 Riding a Bike Learning Outcomes Aim: Note word ‘safely’ Learning Outcomes (examples could include): By the end of this course you will be able to understand the highway code understand how your bike works, the need to adjust the saddle and handle bars etc Understand the importance of maintaining your bike, ensuring the brakes work, light works, pump available Consider the need for additional safety equipment such as safety helmets, fluorescing jackets balance on a bike and ride it safely and ride to ‘Cycling Proficiency One’ standard

4 Riding a bike Resources Bike (correct size) for each child Trainers bike Helmets and florescent jackets Safe area in which to practice (free from other traffic) Highway code booklet etc

5 Riding a bike Time Depends on each child’s existing ability, knowledge and confidence levels – a pre test might be a good idea – then separate groups depending on ability etc Assuming your group are all, say, 7 years old, in good health and with no special needs, this could be achieved in one week, with the child ‘attending’ for one hour a day.

6 Riding a bike The Cost Will children bring their own bikes? Is this taking place in their own neighbourhood? Additional travelling/venue costs?) How many ‘trainers’ do you need to pay? How many ‘other’ staff do you need? etc

7 Riding a Bike Course Content – Learning & Teaching methods Demonstration ‘Having a go’ – consider child’s motivation in being there Building up short exercises leading to more difficult tasks Studying highway code – which ‘bits’ do they need to know and what’s the best way to teach children this?

8 Riding a Bike Assessment Write an essay on how to ride a bike? Sit an exam on bike maintenance? Or get the child to:  Demonstrate riding a bike safely  Wear appropriate safety equipment  Illustrate ability to adjust bike and check safety features  Answer verbal questions on the meaning of relevance highway code signs I.E. YOUR ASSESSMENT WILL BE ABLE TO PROVE YOU’VE MET YOUR LEARNING OUTCOMES

9 Riding a Bike Evaluation How successful was your course?  How many children passed the assessment? (Review course if this was ‘below average’)  How many children were hurt during the training sessions?  One year later, how many of these children are still safely riding their bikes?  Can you justify the costs in terms of children’s lives saved – is there any statistical evidence to back this up?  etc

10 Your assignment Learning Outcomes What will your team leaders ‘be able to do’ by the end of training course? For example - By the end of this training course participants will be able to:  Understand the organisation’s disciplinary procedures and the need to enforce this  Conduct an effective disciplinary interview  etc

11 Your assignment The Content – Learning & Teaching methods This is a large organisation so it will have Grievance and Disciplinary procedures. What do the participants need to know about Disciplinary procedures? What are the most important ‘bits’? What sequence should they learn this in? How much time have you got for them to learn in? What’s the best way for them to learn this? (How do people learn? See earlier slides)  Lecture?  Handout?  Video?  Case Study?  Discussion?  etc

12 Your assignment The Assessment How are you going to ensure they are able to put this knowledge into practice?  Get them to write you an essay on what they intend to do?  Get them to respond to a case study?  Get them to sit an exam?  Get them to role play a disciplinary interview?

13 Your Assignment The evaluation How will you know whether your training course worked or not?  Ask the participants?  Ask their line managers when they go back to work whether there has been a change in their behaviour? (Can you be sure that any change is thanks to your intervention?)  Measure whether problems have decreased in the identified teams? (Again, can you be sure that any change is thanks to your intervention?)
