1.Look at the pieces of the picture. 2.Can you guess what is in the picture?

What is this?

Does this help you to know what it is?

What is the new object you see in the picture? Does this change what you thought the first thing was?

Now what do you see? How do you think this happened?

What could have caused the house to fall over? How did a tree get in the house?

Is this what you expected to see in the beginning? Is this a good title for this picture? http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/r?pp/ils:@filreq(@field(NUMBER+@band(cph+3a47000))+@field(COLLID+stereo)) TITLE: The Johnstown Calamity. A slightly damaged house

This damage was caused by a flood. A flood is when a large amount of water causes a river or other body of water to overflow. Powerful floods can cause a lot of damage.

Read these questions. Think about them as you look at the next set of slides showing floods and flood damage. How can water cause so much damage? What causes a flood? Are there different causes of floods? What can people do to stay safe in a flood?
