Circle Graphs Foundations of Algebra

A Circle Graph, a.k.a. Pie Chart, represents data as part of a circle. This is most effective for looking at parts or percents of a whole. For example: In a sporting goods store the total sales are represented by the sales of clothing, shoes, and equipment. In a Circle Graph, it informs you of what percent each item makes up of the total sales in the store. What is a Circle Graph??

What is it used for???? Recall Line and Bar Graphs: –Line Graphs track changes over time –Bar Graphs compare things to each other Circle Graphs compares things as parts or percents of a whole

Example of a Circle Graph

Circle Chart Example

Circle Charts and Fractions Circle Charts deal with a whole set of data and compares it to itself. Example: There are 19 students in this class. 7 are boys and 12 are girls. Together boys and girls make up the entire class. Write as a fraction… Boys represent 7/19 and girls 12/19.

Circle Charts and Percents Just like how circle charts use Boys: 7/19 = 0.368 = about 37% Girls: 12/19 = 0.631 = about 63% Check….37% + 63% = 100% or the whole class fractions they also are very commonly used with percentages. Example: The class has 19 students and 7 are boys and 12 are girls. Represent these numbers in percentages.

Student Circle Chart

Practice Fractions You are baking a cake. You need 25 cups of ingredients. You will need 10 cups of Flour, 3 cups of eggs, 2 cups of chocolate, 5 cups of sugar, and 5 cups of other ingredients. Represent each ingredient as a fraction. Flour: 10/25 Egg: 3/25 Chocolate: 2/25 Sugar: 5/25 Other: 5/25 Turn these into percentages!

Cake Circle Chart

Reminder - What tools do you have?? Three tools to use when representing gathered data: –Line Graphs when tracking changes in time –Bar Graphs when you need to compare data –Circle Graphs when needing to represent data as a whole or as parts of a whole.
