1 It’s A Wrap! DAY 1

2 Think Tank Time DAY 1 List some conditions that bacteria need to grow and multiply. Write your answers on an index card.

3 Think Big! As you view the video, think about why engineers need to work in teams. How does knowledge of math and science help engineers? Video

4 Bacterial infection strikes the South!
E. Coli Hits 11 Officials Race Against the Clock NEWSFLASH!

5 DEFINE THE PROBLEM Fresh produce can promote the growth of bacteria that cause infections in humans. Packaging needs to be improved. Optimal temperature ranges need to be identified

6 RESEARCH Work as a Team! Think about what information your team needs to begin your work. Discuss any questions you may have with your team. Write your questions on the Handout 1.

7 DEVELOP Work as a Team! On Handout 1 use what you learned in your research to brainstorm and discuss some ideas your team has for designing a package to reduce the growth of bacteria. Sketch your ideas.

8 Criteria & Constraints
Criteria: (musts) Inhibit bacterial growth when heated. Protect and preserve the food at safe temperatures. Constraints: (trade-offs) Be constructed from available materials. Conform to the size determined by your teacher.

9 Time to choose your prototype design!!
Work as a Team! Time to choose your prototype design!!

10 It’s A Wrap! DAY 2

11 Think Tank Time DAY 2 How has your team worked together well during this engineering challenge? What is one thing you think your team could do better? What would you like to do better as a team member?

12 CREATE, TEST, & EVALUATE Check your materials list.
Work as a Team! Check your materials list. Choose a team member to gather materials. Construct your package. Test. Use data to evaluate the effectiveness of your package.

13 COMMUNICATE Did your package meet the criteria for the challenge?
Work as a Team! Did your package meet the criteria for the challenge? Share what worked and what didn’t work with 2 other teams and describe any changes you would like to make.

14 It’s A Wrap! DAY 3

15 Think Tank Time Think about what you learned in Day 2…..
What did you learn about your packaging from your Day 2 testing? What did you learn about packaging from other teams? Write your answers on an index card.

16 What if? The proper storage temperature for most fruits is -1C to 4C (30°-40°F). Think about taking fruit snack packs to the beach in a paper bag. The temperature at the beach is 35°C (95°F). Based on your data, what will happen to the fruit?

17 REDESIGN Allow each team member to share at least one idea for redesigning your package. Decide on a procedure for your team’s redesign. Construct, test and evaluate your team’s new and improved prototype!

18 Class Data Chart Team ID Final Temperature After Heating
Safe or Unsafe
