2. Introduction to the brief To design the reception area, main bar and restaurant of The Bradley House Hotel, a 3 star, mid-budget, stylish hotel in the heart of Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter (NQ). The hotel is housed in a “flat-iron” shaped, former shipping warehouse, built in 1855 in a Late-Georgian style. The building is Grade II listed and many of the original features have been carefully maintained.

3. The Brief The restaurant - “Cottonopolis” (after the nickname Manchester received at the height of the cotton trade industrial boom) is a contemporary “British Brassiere” which should have a formal, but relaxed, feel. The Bar - “The Mercury Head”, a reference to the building’s history as a hat factory, will take on the form of a traditional Victorian public house, with a modern “twist.” All designs should work with the building and exploit the traditional features.

4. Inspiration and design concepts Inspired by the existing, traditional warehouse features, the quirky Northern Quarter setting a twist on a traditional Victorian tavern and simple, pared back design.
