4 Let’s Move to the City To farm more land and produce extra crops, people in larger villages built irrigation systems. This freed people up to learn new skills -pottery -metal objects -woven cloth

5 Civilization & Change Interactions Among People  Cultural diffusion  spread of ideas, customs, and technology from one people to another  Famine, drought, and disasters  led people to migrate  People shared and adapted customs  Trade  new goods/better production methods

6 Civilization & Change Interactions Among People  Shared religious beliefs  Warfare  assimilation  conquerors forced their way of life upon the people they defeated  adapt  conquerors adopted the ways of the conquered peoples  Sharing technology and ideas  Bronze working & writing

7 Paleolithic v. Neolithic (Religious Beliefs) (200,000 years ago) v. (8000 BCE – 3400BCE) During the Paleolithic (Old Stone) Age religious beliefs centered around: -Nature -animal spirits -an afterlife During the Neolithic (New Stone) Age, beliefs shifted to: -nature gods and goddess

9 Where they Civilized? First Civilization rose in SUMER (now modern day Iraq) Civilization had 5 characteristics: 1. Advanced cities/(cities) 2. Specialized Workers (job specialization) 3. Complex Institutions (organized governments) 4. Record Keeping (writing) 5. Advanced Technology (arts & architecture/public works)
