3. School Advisory Councils are…  Also known as S.A.C.  A group intended to represent the broad school community and those persons closest to the students who will share responsibility for guiding the school toward continuous improvement.  Required by all schools, including charter schools

4. SAC is…  Created and governed by law  Elected by peers  Subject to the Sunshine Law  Assist leaders (principal, superintendent) with school district direction  Have the goal of increasing student achievement for all students in a safe learning environment

5. Role of the SAC  Assists in preparation and evaluation of SIP  Decides how school improvement is met  Assists principal with the school budget ideas  Works hand in hand together for the success of the students and the school!

6. SAC Members are…  Made up of principal, appropriate balanced number of teachers, staff, parents, community members, and students (Assistant Principals may not be voting members)  Must represent ethnic, racial, economic community  Document student demographics for specific day for membership compliance  Free and reduced lunch percentages determines low- socio-economic make-up  Student race/ethnicity percentages must be represented by SAC (within 5%)  Elected by peer groups

14. What is “No Child Left Behind”? Education act signed into law in 2002 that aims to:  Ensure that every student has a high- quality education;  Challenge and motivate students;  Provide highly qualified teachers, who use proven teaching methods; and  Ensure a safe, drug free learning environment.

15. What is Title I?  Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools.  The goal of Title I is a higher quality of education for every child.  The program serves millions of children in elementary and secondary schools each year. Both, Somerset Neighborhood Elementary and Somerset Preparatory Middle School are Title I schools.

16. How Title I Works  The federal government provides funding to states each year for Title I.  The Florida Department of Education sends the money to the district.  The school district identifies eligible schools and provides Title I funds.

Title I Parent Liaisons  We need Parent Liaisons to attend Title I Parent Meetings and represent our school!  There are several meetings throughout the school year that we would like at least 3 parents to attend. Once announced by Title I, they will be listed in the Main Office and posted on our school website.  The MAIN Meeting is the Title I Parent Seminar is on January 31, 2015 at Signature Gardens.
