3 Toward Democracy Debate over male suffrage led to the organization of the women’s suffrage movement. Not achieved in U.S. until 1920, with passing of the 19 th Amendment.

8 Civil War (1861-1865) Was fought to preserve the Union Not to bring an end to slavery (becomes a means to an end) Interesting Lincoln along with most northerners were racist Fighting not nearly as bad as depicted Took breaks to swim in rivers together, spend Christmas together

9 Civil War (cont’d) Emancipation Proclamation (1863) Things are going poorly for the North at this time Slavery now an issue Southern defeat brings reform 13 th A: Abolition of slavery 14 th A: Granting of citizenship 15 th A: Right to vote
