3 Supporters of the New Deal  Francis Perkins:  Sec. of Labor  1 st female cabinet member  Progress for women in the Fed. Gov’t.  Eleanor Roosevelt  Pushed FDR to hire more women in the Fed. Gov’t.  Pushed to get more help for African Americans  Mary McLeod Bethune  Organized the “Black Cabinet”  African American group that advised FDR on issues facing the black community  Ensured New Deal programs were hiring African Americans

4 Critics of the New Deal  Father Charles Coughlin  Wanted a guaranteed income & nationalization of the banks  Dr. Francis Townsend  Felt the New Deal did not do enough to help the poor & elderly

Fair Labor Standards Act (1938)The Wagner Act (1935)  Listed unfair labor & business practices  Supported right of workers’ to organize & use collective bargaining  National Labor Relations Board: Heard grievances of workers National minimum wage & work week 40 hour work week, down from 44 hrs $.25 to $.40 per hr. (1 st time) No one younger than 16 in factories No reforms in health insurance

10  By 1939 New Deal over & FDR faced with European problems  New Deal did not end depression, but helped by creating jobs  WWII causes end of depression  New Deal compared to socialism  Why?  Created $40 bil. deficit  1 st time Fed. Gov’t. took responsibility for economic wellbeing of citizens  Expanded power & debt of Fed. Gov’t. Impacts of the New Deal
