Subjects and Predicates Essential Sentence Components

COMPLETE SUBJECTS AND PREDICATES The man went. COMPLETE SUBJECT- tells what or who the sentence is about. What kind of words could we add to the subject to make it more complete, interesting?

Complete predicates What kinds of words could we add to learn to make it more complete? The man combed. A complete predicate includes the verb and the words related to it. It tells what the subject did or is.

Complete Subject Examples: 1. The comet hurled toward Earth. 2. Its tail was two million miles long. 3. It kept speeding toward America every day. Now, you write an example of a sentence with a complete subject in and underline it once.

Complete Predicate Examples: 1. The comet hurled toward Earth. 2. Its tail was two million miles long. 3. It kept speeding toward America every day. Now write a sentence with a complete predicate and underline it twice.

Reminders: COMPLETE SUBJECT- tells what or who the sentence is about. The interesting man with the wart on his nose yelled. A complete predicate includes the verb and the words related to it. It tells what the subject did or is. The man combed his hair with a rake.

SIMPLE SUBJECT The simple subject is the main word in the subject. The interesting man with the wart on his nose yelled. 1. The comet hurled toward Earth. 2. Its tail was two million miles long. 3. It kept speeding toward America every day.

SIMPLE PREDICATES The simple predicate is the main word (verb) in the complete predicate. The man combed his hair with a rake. 1. The comet hurled toward Earth. 2. Its tail was two million miles long. 3. It kept speeding toward America every day.

Fragment A fragment is a group of words that lacks a subject, a predicate, or both. It does not make a complete thought. It may not have proper capitalization or punctuation as well. The new president. What should we do to fix it? Rakes his hair with a comb. What should we do to fix this one?

Discuss how to fix the following fragments. Used the correct formula. Mrs. Cucchiarra, the lady in the blue dress, standing by the water fountain. In a store by the lakefront.

Practice: Turn your purple Language Arts Today books to pgs. 6-7; we’ll review simple subjects/ predicates and then go to pgs. 8-9 for compound subject/predicates.
