3 “In our vocation, to speak of witness by our life without giving any evidence of action is to be wanting in realism. The words of St. James could be applied to us: «Of what use is it, my brethren, if a man claims to have faith, and has no deeds to show for it?».” ( Bro. Basilio Rueda Guzmán, “Special General Chapter”, Circular January 2nd 1968, Vol. XXIV, N° 1-5, p. 134) “In our vocation, to speak of witness by our life without giving any evidence of action is to be wanting in realism. 4 “Let us remember the reaction of our Founder when he found that a Brother had allowed a poor man to leave without being given anything. If he were alive to- day and were confronted by the call of the Council and the urgent needs of the times, he would be most anxious that the poor of the 20th. century should receive not only what we can give them as an Institution, but with it the appreciation of what lies behind the gift.” (Bro. Basilio Rueda Guzmán, “Special General Chapter”, Circular January 2nd 1968, Vol. XXIV, N° 1-5, p. 134) “Let us remember the reaction of our Founder when he found that a Brother had allowed a poor man to leave without being given anything. 5 “Now certain needs are vital to man, and if not satisfied, render development almost impossible. These include: sufficient food, sufficient clothing, lodging, the rudiments of education, repose of mind and body, work that is not degrading and which allows personal development together with sufficient remuneration for one's lifetime. Alas, how many millions of people find they cannot satisfy these basic needs.” (Bro. Basilio Rueda Guzmán, “Special General Chapter”, Circular January 2nd 1968, Vol. XXIV, N° 1-5, p. 148) “Now certain needs are vital to man, and if not satisfied, render development almost impossible. 6 “As teachers of the Gospel we cannot counsel the way of violence nor favour the choice which inspires it. Still less can we transform. the doctrine of Christ whose content is certainly and above all religious and fraternal, into an ideology for violent revolution. Let no one be mistaken about that.” (Bro. Basilio Rueda Guzmán, “Special General Chapter”, Circular January 2nd 1968, Vol. XXIV, N° 1-5, p. 171) “As teachers of the Gospel we cannot counsel the way of violence nor favour the choice which inspires it. 7 “Let our ardent desire, which cannot be too great, for the dignity of the person, for justice, charity, peace and solidarity, never lead us to fall into a state of confusion of values. From the very fact that we are responsible for the formation of those coming on, we must be very active and at the same time alert and clear in our ideas.” (Bro. Basilio Rueda Guzmán, “Special General Chapter”, Circular January 2nd 1968, Vol. XXIV, N° 1-5, p. 174) “Let our ardent desire, which cannot be too great, for the dignity of the person, for justice, charity, peace and solidarity, never lead us to fall into a state of confusion of values.
