8 BI 3063 J. Mork H08 Genetic and biologic stock management INTRODUCTION As humans we utilize a variety of aquatic animal resources for our subsistence; from small captive stocks to enormously large wild stocks, from molluscs and shrimps to fishes, seabirds, and marine mammals. Current principles and tools for marine resource management have developed during a hundred years or so, and are still under development. While, in the early days, the management focus was mostly on production and landings, most of the biologic, genetic, ethic and legal principles and topics in marine stock management have been developed and included during the last 50-60 years. Lessons have been learned, from practical experience, that even the enormously large marine resources can be over-exploited and driven to commercial (and sometimes biological) extinction by human activities. Moreover, modes of exploitation can have negative effects on biodiversity at species and population level, and ultimately on the evolutionary potential of species. For a realistic insight into the history of, and problems in, practical marine fish wild stock management, this lecture series uses many examples from two very large resource species in the North Atlantic; the Norwegian spring spawning herring (NSS) and the Northeast Arctic cod (NEAC).
