CSE 1105 Week 1 CSE 1105 Instructor: Mike O’Dell Office: 342 Nedderman Hall Phone: (817) 272-3988** Email address: odell@cse.uta.edu

CSE 1105 Week 1 CSE 1105 Lab Coordinator: Nathalie Tacconi Office: 214 Cribbs Building Email address: nbt5575@omega.uta.edu

CSE 1105 Week 1 CSE 1105 Class Web Site: http://ranger.uta.edu/~odell/

CSE 1105 Week 1 Course Description CSE 1105, 1 hour credit. Provides an introduction to basic engineering concepts. Also provides opportunities to develop skills in oral and written communication, and CSE department-specific material. Case studies are presented and analyzed via guest lecturers and labs. One of CE1104, CSE 1104, EE 1104, IE 1104 and MAE 1104 is required as a co-requisite.  This course ONLY counts toward a degree in the CSE Department.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Prerequisites None. Note: The course is intended only for students pursuing a degree in the Computer Science and Engineering Department.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Textbooks Required Textbooks: None Readings will be from the web, UTA Library on-line materials, and optional textbooks.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Course Objectives Students will gain an understanding of  the engineering approach, (design, ethics, problem solving and creativity)  engineering disciplines This will be accomplished using laboratory examples & experiments. Emphasis is placed on team-building.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Course Objectives In short… This class is planned as preparation for the CSE program of choice (CSE, CS or SE only).

CSE 1105 Week 1 Course Objectives But why are your really here??? … so, at the end of your CSE/CS/SwE degree plan, you won’t have to say, “I wish I would have known about that a few years ago.”

CSE 1105 Week 1 Time to Allow for CSE courses In general for the College of Engineering,  1 hour of class time and  2-3 hours of out-of-class time are required and should be planned each week for each credit hour of class.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Time to Allow for CSE 1105 CSE 1105 carries one-hour credit, and has effectively 3 hours of work (lecture and lab) per week. If not completed each week, work should be done outside of that allotted time, but before 1105 meets the following week (unless specifically stated in the lab write- up).

CSE 1105 Week 1 Scheduled Lab Times Sect.DayTimeLab (Instructors) 003Wed2:00-3:50P123 NH (TBD) 006Wed7:00-8:50P124 NH (TBD) 007Thurs12:00-1:50P123 NH (TBD) OpenFri 1:00-3:00P123 NH (TBD) NOTE: each of you must be in one, and only one, of the numbered sections shown above.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Lab Schedule/Coverage

CSE 1105 Week 1 Lab Notes for Week 1 A file containing the Lab Assignment for the next week will be available on the class web site each week by Thursday, for viewing, downloading (and therefore for printing). Print a copy to bring to your lab session each week. (Note: the lab instructor will NOT provide copies for you.)

CSE 1105 Week 1 CSE 1105 – Lab 1 Getting Started with Accounts & Tools This lab will be an opportunity to set up your Exchange and omega accounts. It is important that you begin to become familiar with Unix, so this week you will start to become familiar with UTA’s Unix machine omega. Task #1 Set Up Your Exchange account All students registered for this class should have been assigned an account on UTA’s Exchange…

CSE 1105 Week 1 Computer Use Proficiency (CUP) CUP, as required by the University, is demonstrated for CSE majors in CSE 1105. So, demonstration of proficiency in: (1) word processing, (2) spreadsheets, (3) library skills, (4) use of the internet and (5) email are required for satisfactory completion of the course, but measurement of these skills will not enter into the computation of the final grade.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Computer Use Proficiency (CUP) During labs in Week 3*, the lab assignment is to demonstrate the ability to do word processing using Word and start to manipulate a spreadsheet using Excel. During Week 8* of the class, there is a lab assignment involving finding information on the internet and using the UTA Library on- line resources for research.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Grading Grades will be letter grades ‘A’ through ‘F. The course grade is composed of : Laboratory assignments: 65% (per schedule in syllabus) Two Course exams: 24% (12% each) Attendance at lectures: 11% (absence = 1% deduction, missing 5 or more lectures will result in loss of full 11%) If you miss a lab period, you can try to attend another lab during the same week; email Nathalie to check. If you miss the week, you may be able to attend an open lab on Friday. Labs should be made up by Friday of the week that they are assigned. (A 20% penalty/week will be assessed after Friday.) Note: not all labs can be made up.

CSE 1105 Week 1 ABET Critical Skill Assessment CSE 1105 is an assessment vehicle for one of CSE’s specified ABET outcomes.  “Knowledge of contemporary issues in Computer Science & Engineering” The assessment mechanism that we will use is the 3-week Oral Presentation lab sequence (labs 6, 7 and 8) You must achieve a satisfactory score on these 3 labs in order to receive a grade of ‘C’ or better in this course.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Contacting the Instructors Email is the best way to communicate with your instructor outside of class. Send emails to: odell@cse.uta.edu. There are several teaching assistants (TAs) working with this class in various capacities. Email for the TAs will be provided when available. Emails sent from the instructor will be sent ONLY to the account that is setup as your default in MyMav. Always begin the subject line with “1105help”. NOTE: Assignments should be submitted to the email addresses specified for the assignment in the assignment document. Credit will only be given for work submitted to the correct address.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Academic Honesty The College of Engineering Statement of Ethics is found on the 1105 class web site. It covers ethical behavior in a student role:  CHEATING on quizzes or exams,  PLAGIARISM, or  COLLUSION on any assignment will not be tolerated at UT Arlington.

CSE 1105 Week 1 Slides for Week 1 Lecture PowerPoint slides for today’s class will be available after class on the class web site, for viewing and for downloading (and therefore for printing if you wish).

CSE 1105 Week 1 Question & Answer

CSE 1105 Week 1 To recap Before you leave today, be sure you have a copy of the syllabus have a copy of the CoE Ethics Statement know how to access the class web site to get the additional materials know your assigned lab section ask any questions that are on your mind.
