Using Photoshop CS5 Click to get started…

Photographers practicing outdoor photography may notice their photos lacking vibrant colors. This is largely due to the constant change that occurs in natural lighting. Over cast skies can darken or saturate photos, while bright overhead sunlit skies can wash out photos. Atmospheric lighting can often turn photos a bluish hue.  Dust particles in the air can give a photograph a yellow or brown hue. If this is not the expected outcome, Photoshop can help you digitally adjust hue and saturation.

Click on the blue box next to the picture you consider more vibrant. First, lets compare a set of photographs. Which of the two pictures below have a vibrant tonality? Sorry… Try again. Compare the green stems of the flowers. Correct! This is a slight comparison, notice how the sunlight appears brighter in this photo.

Click the correct color hue imbalance for each photo below. Atmosphere and dust particles can often change the hue of a photo. Do you know the difference between warm and cool hues? Try again.Correct! The ram appears to have a blue hue. Correct! The prairie dog appears to have a red hue. Try again. WarmCoolWarmCool

Click on the blue box next to the photo that captured too much light. Light conditions can affect the shutter speed of your digital camera altering the way it captures light. Below are two photos affected by miscalculated shutter speeds. Correct! This photo appears washed out from too much light exposure. Sorry… Try again. This photo is over saturated with color.

Adobe Photoshop has a variety of options to help adjust hue and saturation problems, allowing digital photographers to create the vibrant photos they wish to achieve. In this first lesson you will learn how to adjust Hue in Photoshop using the Hue/Saturation Adjustment function. This photo is an example of atmospheric lighting creating a cool/blue hue to the objects.
