Digital Photography Teresa Lankford 08/18/11

STEP #1 Call up the image file called “Sarah002.jpg” and position in your Photoshop window as shown. Notice the “lasso” is highlighted on your toolbar. (See Arrow)

STEP #2 Click on the “lasso” and hold. A sub-menu appears with three tool options. Select the middle tool called “Polygonal Lasso Tool”.

STEP #3 Find a starting point to start drawing a line around Sarah’s hair. In this case, we have used her right shoulder area to start dropping points. Continue dropping points around her hairline as shown. The distance between the points you drop should be about the thickness of the red arrow. CAUTION: Too much space between points makes for a sloppy selection area.

STEP #4 Continue dropping points around Sarah’s hairline until you reach the place where you started (see red arrow). Make sure you don’t accidentally include parts of her face or skip over the hair that lands on her shoulders.

STEP #5 Once you have completed selecting Sarah’s hair, go to the upper menu bar and click on “Edit” and the select “Copy”.

STEP #6 After you have used “Copy” to copy the entire hairline area you have selected, the go back to the main menu bar, select “Edit” again, and the select “Paste”. This will place her hairline on a new “Layer” separate from the original image. You won’t notice it because it is placed in the exact same place on top of the original image.

STEP #7 Now go to the main menu bar and click on “Image”, then click on “Adjustments” and then select “Variations” located at the very bottom of the sub-menu.

STEP #8 The “Variations” option allows you to alter the color of Sarah’s hair in a variety of ways. …On step # 9 we will turn Sarah into a red head! Note: You can always return to the original hair color by clicking on the top left-hand picture named “Original”.

STEP #9 Click on the “More Red” option TWO times to add lots of red color to Sarah’s hair. Notice the “Current Pick” window changes to reflect any coloring that you add.

STEP #10 Once you have added the red coloring to Sarah’s hair, click “Okay” and you will see the results on your original image. Notice: In the “Layers” window (red arrow) that Sarah’s hair has been separated from the original.

STEP #11 In the “Main Menu Bar” select “Image” and then “Adjustments” and then select “Hue/Saturation”. We’re going to now make Sarah a Blonde!

STEP #12 Move the “Hue”, “Saturation” and “Lightness” sliders as shown …and Sarah is now a Blonde! Try using other colors to create all kinds of new hair colors!.
