The Big Bang (43) Where do we come from, where are we going?

Hubble’s Law Galaxies are moving away from us. The farther away they are from us the faster they are moving.

Implications of Hubble’s Law If galaxies are moving away from us, then they were once all much closer.

What is the Big Bang? Event from which the Universe began expanding. Into what does the Universe expand? Where was the Big Bang? Where is the center of the Universe?

How Old is the Universe? How long has it been since all galaxies were together? Until recently, there was much disagreement on the age of the Universe. Different methods yielded different ages. Some showed a Universe younger than some of its stars. Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) astronomers have found stars about 14 billion light years from Earth.

Ch10 Timeline of the Big Bang All matter and energy found in the universe today was made during the first moment of time. Including the matter that makes up you! 1. All matter and energy was jammed into a space the size of an atom.

Ch10 Timeline of the Big Bang (cont.) 2. This extremely dense point exploded. Created matter and light. Flying in all directions. Space-time fabric began expanding. H bomb: 100 million degrees C. Big Bang: 1000 trillion degrees C.

Ch10 Timeline of the Big Bang (cont.) 3. Extremely high temperatures right after the explosion. Only things in existence: Quarks Make up protons and neutrons. Photons (light).

Ch10 Timeline of the Big Bang (cont.) 4. Universe expanded & began to cool. 1/10,000 second: protons and neutrons formed. After a few min. nuclei of Hydrogen and Helium formed. 5. Hundreds of thousands of years after explosion, electrons began orbiting these nuclei and formed first atoms.

Ch10 Timeline of the Big Bang (cont.) 6. Billions of years after initial explosion, gravity caused these atoms to condense into nebula. 7. Billions of years later nebula would eventually form first stars, galaxies and planets.

Ch10 Big Bang Comic Strip (42) Draw a 6 panel comic strip that illustrates and describes what happened during and after the Big Bang. You can have captions and/or text bubbles in your panels to explain what is happening. Illustrations should be done in color. Write a 4-6 sentence summary that briefly describes your comic strip, what the Big Bang is and why it is important.
