1 Writing Strategies: Organization and Focus
WS1.2(5th Grade) Create Expository Compositions with: 1. Topic and important ideas in sequence 2. Details & transitional expressions 3. A conclusion which summarizes important ideas (6 questions on the CST)

Topic/Main Idea Transition Detail 1 with support examples Detail 2 with support examples Detail 3 with support examples Conclusion which restates main idea

3 Paragraphs Have Purpose
Introduction: Paragraph 1 Include a topic sentence which tells the reader what your essay is mostly about. Every essay has a topic/main idea. Every paragraph in the essay has its own topic.

4 Paragraphs Have Purpose
Body: Paragraphs 2-4 Often begin with a transitional expression: First…, Next…, The final place… Each paragraph has it’s own sub-topic which is stated at the beginning. The remaining sentences give examples to support the sub-topic.

5 Paragraphs Have Purpose
Conclusion: Paragraph 5 The conclusion should restate the topic of the essay. The conclusion should summarize the main points of the essay. The conclusion should “wrap-up” the essay.
