The Chemehuevi Tribe By Cecilia Frankenfeld November 17, 2008 4 th Grade, Mrs. Johnson Chemehuevi tribe!

Location The Chemehuevi tribe lived in the Desert Region. They lived west of the Colorado River and south of Death Valley. They were located from the Kingston Range, up to about the border of Riverside and Imperial Counties.

Housing The houses of the Chemehuevi tribe were dome-shaped with flat roofs. They were partly underground, and had a fire pit in the center of the floor. Right above the fire pit was a smoke hole so that smoke could escape.

Clothing The Chemehuevi loved Beauty, especially the men. All members of the tribe had tatoos on their faces. The women wore earrings and skirts of grass and plant fibers. The Chemehuevi tribe mostly made their clothes out of hides and pelts. The women most commonly wore their long hair down, and usually had bangs. The Chemehuevi tribe made robes and blankets of rabbit skin. The men wore eagle and hawk feathers in their hair on special occasions. They made sandals out of strips of yucca trees and much more.

Food The Chemehuevi farmed like the Mojave, because they too lived by the Colorado River. They used salt for preserving food for times when they couldn’t get that certain food. Pinon cones were pulled off of trees with hooks and roasted to get the seeds out. The blooms from barrel cactus were cooked for three days in salt water (for preserving).

Religion A shaman was a doctor who was believed to hold magical healing powers. There were many kinds of shamen, such as the bear doctor and snake doctor. The bear doctor could heal almost anything and turn into a bear while a snake doctor could cure bites and toothaches. All shamen had a spirit animal to help them and some shamen could even turn into their animal.
