Geometry 14 - |-2|, October 2012 1)Place binder and text on desk. 2)Warm up: (bottom back) Review page 135 Briefly summarize “slope” Write down the “slope formula” DO pg. 136: 1 and 2

Objective Students will learn the basics of geometric constructions by taking notes, watching a video and by duplicating segments and angles.

homework DUE TUESDAY: Definitions (word, define, sketch in vocab section): Definitions (word, define, sketch in vocab section): sketch, draw, construct, perpendicular bisector, angle bisector, altitude, median, midsegment (triangle), circumcenter, centroid 3.1, pg. 147: 1 – 10 (need patty paper) 3.1, pg. 147: 1 – 10 (need patty paper) Write a paragraph- what are geometric constructions? when were they first used and why do we study them today? [document your source] possible source: http://www.mathopenref.com/constructions.html Write a paragraph- what are geometric constructions? when were they first used and why do we study them today? [document your source] possible source: http://www.mathopenref.com/constructions.html

important distinctions sketch– quickly by hand draw- use tools (protractor and ruler) (protractor and ruler)construct- ONLY use a compass and straightedge http://www.mathopenref.com/constructions.html

One Corner On a piece of notebook paper, draw an angle similar to the one shown, taking up most of the top half of your paper. Then, in the bottom half of the paper, make as good a copy as you can, using only a straightedge and compass.

read pg. 145 together Summarize: 1) don’t use a protractor or ruler 2) rely ONLY on a compass and straightedge 3) patty paper constructions use folding and tracing only 4) use marks to indicate congruency, parallel, perpendicular, right angles etc! 5) “duplicate” means to copy using only CONSTRUCTION TOOLS

Display in Deutches Museum in Munich, Germany

Constructions See sections 3.1 and 3.2 for step by step directions SEGMENTS- pg. 145: Investigation 1 5 On your classwork paper, draw and duplicate 5 different line segments with a compass and then again with patty paper ANGLES-pg. 146: SILENTLY consider each step Demonstration: watch and practice DRAW 5 different angles on your CW paper Use the methods shown to duplicate each angle Check the measures with a protractor Watch online: http://www.mathopenref.com/constcopyangle.html

Debrief what is a construction? what is easy? what might be confusing to some students?
