2 What is one of the most visited websites in the world that was founded in NZ? WikiEducator Started by Dr Wayne Mackintosh of NZ Originally based at Otago Polytechnic but moved because of demand to US server. Goal –To provide free educational content

3 Educators want to collaborate. Is it in teachers DNA? Collaboration is the key to this wiki. Aim: to bring together educators to share knowledge. A learning community approach.

4 WikiEducator Allows learning materials and resources (such as textbooks, lesson plans and lecture notes) to be open and available for free. Materials can also be modified, adapted and resused. Why re-invent the wheel?

5 WikiEducator Aims to do for education what Wikipedia has done for education. Wiki is used by 100 countries. Receives nine million hits a month. Is within the top 1% of visited websites

6 WikiEducator How many NZ teachers are aware of its existence? How many NZ teachers contribute?

7 WikiEducator An independent charitable initiative under the auspices of the Open Education Resource OER foundation Uses Media Wiki an open source wiki software Continually being update and refined Stable

8 Copyright for text books Original copyright holder retains copyright Permission is given for certain usage. To reuse, adapt, modify Even sell material if so desired: provided original copyright holder is acknowledged. Open textbooks: the future of education?

9 WikiEducator training Free training is offered to all teachers At least one online training session per month Between 30-40 countries represented in each workshop Participants are encouraged to donate some of their knowledge for new resources material
