2 TEENAGE PREGNANCY 40% of teen girls get pregnant at least once before age 20 66% of all students have sex prior to high school graduation, increasing their risk for pregnancy and/or STDs Teens who have given birth face bleak future prospects for their educational and economical well being

3 TEENAGE PREGNANCY Teen parents' children's future prospects are even worse; poorer health, more behavioral problems, worse educational outcomes and more likely to become teen parents themselves Many sexually active teens still do not use contraception correctly and consistently every time they have sex, particularly condoms at the first sexual experience One in four sexually active teens will contract an STD each year, some incurable, and HIV which is life-threatening [2] [2]

4 TEENAGE PREGNANCY Where sexual activity was forced concerns exist as individuals are victims of: Incest Rape

5 TEENAGE PREGNANCY Clinical problems Denial Illegal abortions and complications of sepsis, infection, haemorrhage, infertility….death Late presentation for prenatal care Hidden pregnancies and deliveries. Infanticide Abondonment

6 Medical Problems Increased risk of problems in pregnancy Anaemia, low blood count High Blood Pressure Poor nutrition and weight gain

7 Teen Parenting Financial burdens limit quality of life of parents and that given to offspring. Environments generally also unsuitable for raising young child…ie. broken home etc. Young child therefore at risk of same ills.

8 TEENAGE PREGNANCY Sexually active teen continues same behaviour patterns. At risk for STI’s May continue to suffer abusive relationships May conceive other pregnancies

9 Prevention Stronger education wrt sex education Increase awareness of fertility issues, condom usage, contraceptive knowledge. Emergency contraception awareness Stronger social services support networks for victims of sexual abuse. Support for those whom have already conceived or had children. School programs etc.
