3 Causes of Absolutism Protestant Reformation  as more and more Europeans left the Catholic Church, those leaders who remained loyal to the church, and kept their citizens loyal to the Catholic Church, were granted the title of Absolute Monarch Those leaders who left the Catholic Church for the Protestant faith no longer had to pledge their allegiance to the Pope, and therefore, many became the leaders of the Protestant Church in their kingdom  and were, therefore, absolute anyway
