4 4 Summary of Problems FMC error (wrong tail # in AFN logon): 1 flight -Resolution: -Emphasize proper tail # for entry -Automation update? Filing errors (local coding, modify FRC DCL): 3+ flights -Resolution: -Additional training provided to NY ARTCC, EWR Tower

5 5 Summary of Problems DTAP reconstitution: 1 flight -Resolution: -Improve clock sync -Notify AOCs for possible re-file DSP VHF radio frequency conflict: 1 flight -Resolution: -Frequency deconfliction -Confirm EO applied to acft datalink equipment

6 6 Summary of Problems Errors yet to be resolved: 3 flights -AFN LOGON “REJECTED” (z-date 15 Aug) -Clnc requested, “STANDBY” received (z-date 7 Aug, 21 Aug)

7 7 General Observations DCL Trials continue to be value-added -Uncovered pitfalls early on for: -ARTCC & Tower procedures -FMC handling of various messages -Flight Deck logon / message handling -DTAP hardware/software Suggestion: Continue Trial expansion. More airlines and more airports will each bring forward unique issues to consider.

8 8 General Observations Flight crew confusion on “DCL” terminology -Despite specific CPDLC instructions, they immediately think same as ACARS procedures internationally (Hong Kong, Narita, Cologne, Paris, Mexico City, etc.) -May be confusing for other international operators Suggestion: Create a distinct term for CPDLC DCL

11 11 General Observations ATC hesitant to use DTAP during taxi -Most altitude/freq changes during taxi still via voice Suggestion: Continued practice; more participating aircraft should help make it habit for controllers

12 12 General Observations Although CAF is good for trial count, the ROUTE CLEARANCE makes DCL standout from PDC. We need to continue testing UM79 / UM80s to identify: -Potential FMC problems (partial loads, joining STARs) -Potential printer issues -Potential flight deck human factors issues

13 13 General Observations Need to expand CPDLC UM capability: -Must have capability to join a STAR at any point -Even more critical for dynamic enroute ops -Should provide planned runway in DCL -Impacts how a SID is programmed in FMC -Provides CPDLC option to ATC for rwy change during taxi -If Oceanic controller can assign appr/rwy for TA, Clnc Del should be able to predict dept rwy - Should be able to print all messages -Invaluable comparison tool especially for legacy aircraft
